Why this book exists

Most Indians who earn well are still under-invested. Not because they are careless, but because nobody ever explained mutual funds in plain language — and the people who offered to explain them usually had something to sell.

This book takes you from your first ₹500 SIP to a ₹1 crore goal using Indian examples, Indian tax rules and realistic return assumptions. No jargon, no fund tips, no promises of quick money.

What is inside

  • How SIPs, NAV, units and compounding actually work
  • How to choose your first mutual fund — and how many funds you genuinely need
  • Direct or regular plans: the honest answer, with costs and behaviour compared side by side
  • Asset allocation model portfolios for ages 25, 35, 45 and 55
  • Exactly how much to invest each month to reach ₹10 lakh, ₹50 lakh and ₹1 crore
  • Why a 10% annual step-up can matter more than finding a better fund
  • What to do when the market crashes — and what never to do
  • The tax rules every SIP investor must know, including why each instalment has its own clock
  • Ready-made plans for ₹3,000, ₹5,000, ₹10,000, ₹25,000 and ₹50,000 a month
  • A 30-minute monthly review system, and a day-by-day plan for your first 90 days

Who it is for

  • Salaried professionals who keep meaning to start
  • First-time investors who want the mechanics explained once, properly
  • Anyone already running a SIP but unsure whether it is the right one
  • Business owners with irregular income who need a system that survives a bad month

Who it is not for

  • Anyone looking for fund recommendations — there are none, deliberately
  • Traders, or readers after quick returns
  • Experienced investors who already understand allocation and taxation
  • Anyone wanting personalised advice for their own portfolio — this is a book, not an adviser

About the author

Sudhir Kumar has spent more than two decades in Indian banking and financial services, and writes Finostock — a plain-English personal finance site for India. He is not a SEBI-registered investment adviser, and this book contains general financial education rather than personalised advice.

Wealth is rarely built by one brilliant investment. It is built by hundreds of ordinary SIPs that keep running for years. That is the whole argument of the book, and it is why it is called boring.

Read a bit of it first

Amazon lets you read the opening pages free before deciding, and the book is included in Kindle Unlimited — so if you have a subscription it costs you nothing to try.

If you would rather sample the writing here first, our guide to starting a SIP in India and our piece on why five-year top-performer lists will not help you pick a fund cover the same ground in miniature.
