In the side-hustle generation, many Australians are searching for the key to extra income.
Dropshipping, crypto trading, online tutoring, and crafting are just a few ways we’re scraping together some extra cash.
But some people are taking it to the next level, launching successful businesses and careers from home. Sophia Czarkowski’s business Art by Sophia is booming, she now runs it full-time from home. (Supplied) The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics shows about 867,000 people have more than one job, 180,000 higher than it was in 2017.
Throughout lockdown, many Australians were desperate to supplement their income and online marketplaces like Etsy were booming.
Sophia Czarkowski started her Queensland-based business, Art by Sophia, back in 2016 and it’s since evolved substantially.
In the early days, she was crafting by hand but as her business started to pick up she went searching for ways to speed things up. “I had limited design and technical skills when I first started, so the software made creating designs and cutting them seamless,” she said.
The Cricut Maker 3 is the most impressive of the range, but also the most expensive.
It has the ability to cut, fold, engrave and draw among other capabilities. It can impressively cut crafting materials, including leather and even some types of wood. Sophia has expanded her business, she now takes on corporate clients and custom orders. (Supplied) Czarkowski said last year she made a custom pair of earrings for a wedding with the product.
“The bride absolutely loved them and still wears them, this for me is why I do what I do – to see the love and joy something I crafted brings,” she said. Nicola Dow Smith, Pacific Region Director at Cricut (Supplied) Nicola Dow Smith, the Pacific region director at Cricut, told 9News.com.au demand was high and new products were coming in regularly to cater to every idea.
“We have heard of a lot of cases, not just in Australia but globally, where Cricut has been purchased as a hobby, and this has grown to become a full-time business venture,” she said.
“Members have been turning ideas into projects; projects into products; and before you know it, products into money-making business ventures.” The Cricut Maker 3 (Supplied) Dow Smith said the Cricut community was “super passionate” and had created dozens of Facebook groups to share ideas.
“A lot of people who are using Cricut for their business are in these communities, and are willing to offer their help and advice,” she said.
Pre-pandemic, Cricut makers worked to support wildlife affected by the 2019 bushfires.
“The Cricut community rallied together, created a pattern, and made joey and koala pouches with Cricut cutting machines to send to wildlife support crews,” Dow Smith said. Cricket Maker 3 | Review
There’s plenty of talk about how good the product is but I had to see it for myself.9News.com.au recently put the Cricut Maker 3 to the test. As impressive as it is, it can be quite overwhelming at first.I consider myself to be quite adapt at technology, yet the Cricut Maker 3 was a bit of a learning curve. It was easy enough to set up but I fell short creating my own custom designs. This purpose-made hot iron has three heat settings, mostly used to assist in transferring vinyl to materials. Pre-made designs often have a suggested heat level and guide. If you’re new to crafting and Cricut, I’d say avoid the Cricut Maker 3 on your first go — or at least learn as much as possible before jumping in.
