LOUISVILLE, Ky. —

Over the past couple of years, traveling plans have taken a backseat for many families. But, that’s not the case for a family from Fern Creek.

They’re traveling around the world for a year.

Ashley and Jon Beougher are currently documenting their trip with their two kids and sharing debt-free budgeting tips via their website travelinggraces.com.

“Our goal is just to not only inspire other people with our travels but also make it attainable because if you don’t make it attainable, it’s not inspiring — it’s just frustrating,” Ashley Beougher said.

Budgeting has been key for the Beoughers, they said.

“People don’t like that word ‘budget,’ but we can sit here and say doing a budget every single month for the last 14 and a half years of our marriage has been a huge blessing for us because when you look at where your money is going, most people end up sending and spending money that doesn’t line up with their dreams, their goals and their priorities,” Jon Beougher said.

So far, the family has visited places like Rome; Paris; and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

However, their route around the globe has been somewhat in the hands of COVID-19.

“We probably would’ve had a route and a plan, but when we went during this time we knew that would make it stressful to have these plans and have them inevitably change,” Ashley Beougher said. “We didn’t want lots of credits. We didn’t want lots of changes, so we decided if we’re going to do it we were going to need to just book things like a couple days in advance and just plan our route based on what was open.”

Their 8 and 9-year-olds are learning new languages, budgeting skills, and even spent three weeks doing missionary work in Uganda.

“We’ve kind of always wanted to focus on with our family, less on stuff [and] more on experiences, especially experiences that can help strengthen our relationships and our family,” Jon Beougher said.

“Especially in America, sometimes people that are different than you tend to be scary or people that are different than you, you tend to kind of ostracize. And so one of the things that we wanted to show our kids, and that we’ve done as we go around the world, is that people that live different than us, that’s not a bad thing it’s a good thing to be exposed to.”

The family said that they hope to visit Southeast Asia and Egypt, but their plans will depend on COVID-19 cases in each area.

Right now, the family is finishing a quarantine period after testing positive for the virus around Christmastime.
