SBI Cashback Credit Card Review 2026: Is the 5% Still Worth It?

The SBI Card Cashback is one of the most talked-about credit cards in India, mostly because of one number: 5% back on online spending. It is a genuinely good card for the right person, and a mediocre one for everyone else. This review tells you which is which.

The short verdict

  • Good fit: people who already spend a fair amount online (shopping, food delivery, subscriptions, travel bookings) and who pay the full bill every month.
  • Poor fit: anyone who carries a balance, mostly pays rent, bills, fuel or utilities by card, or wants airport lounges and travel perks.
  • Biggest catch: the cashback is capped, the exclusions list is long, and it has been tightened in 2026. Read the limits below before you apply.

How the cashback works

As of the latest figures published by card-comparison sites, the card gives 5% cashback on eligible online spends and 1% on offline (in-store) spends. There is no minimum spend needed to earn it, and cashback is credited against your statement rather than as points you must redeem.

The important part is the ceiling. Reports on the 2026 changes put the cap at about Rs 2,000 of cashback per statement cycle on online spends and Rs 2,000 on offline spends, with a combined limit of Rs 4,000 per cycle (it used to be Rs 5,000). To earn the full online amount you would need to spend roughly Rs 40,000 a month online. Most people will not hit that, and that is fine: the card still pays well below the cap.

What does not earn cashback

This matters more than the headline rate. According to published summaries, the card does not give the 5% or 1% on categories such as utilities, insurance, fuel, rent, wallet loads, education, jewellery, railways and EMI transactions. Newer restrictions also add digital gaming, tolls and government payments. If those are a big part of your monthly spending, your effective cashback will be far lower than 5%.

Exclusion lists change without much fanfare, so confirm the current terms on SBI Card’s own page before applying.

Fees and costs

  • Joining and annual fee: listed as Rs 999 plus GST each by comparison sites. A fee waiver on reaching a yearly spend threshold has been offered, but the threshold can change, so check it.
  • Interest if you do not pay in full: up to about 3.5% a month, which is roughly 42% a year. One month of interest can wipe out many months of cashback.
  • Eligibility: age 21 to 65, a decent credit score, and documents such as PAN, Aadhaar, address and income proof. Approval is at SBI Card’s discretion.

A quick example

Say you spend Rs 15,000 a month online on eligible things and Rs 10,000 offline. That is roughly Rs 750 plus Rs 100, so about Rs 850 a month, or around Rs 10,200 a year. Subtract the Rs 999 plus GST annual fee if it is not waived, and you are still clearly ahead. Now imagine most of that Rs 15,000 is utilities and a rent payment that do not qualify: the cashback collapses. Check your last three bank statements and sort your spending into eligible and non-eligible before you decide.

Who should pick something else

  • If you tend to carry a balance, avoid credit cards for now. Build the habit with a debit card and an emergency fund first (see our emergency fund guide).
  • If you want lounge access, miles or hotel perks, a travel card will serve you better than a cashback card.
  • If you have no credit history, a card against a fixed deposit can be an easier first step. Our best credit card for beginners guide covers that route.

How to use it well

  • Set up auto-pay for the full statement amount, not the minimum due.
  • Use it only for spends you would make anyway. Cashback is not a reason to buy more.
  • Keep utilisation low (well under 30% of your limit); it helps your credit score. See how to check and improve your CIBIL score.
  • Review the statement each month for the cashback credit and any fee changes.
